Steering question

Post by Faulkner »

I received this question - any advice for Larry?
Larry Stanton wrote:Dan I would like to know if you have any information on rebuilding a steering gear. I have a power unit and as typical in my experience there is 4 or 5 inches right to left free play before the tires move. I know the lock nut and screw on the bottom can adjust some free play out of the worm gear but this doesn't solve the total problem. There's another adjustment the top or is that the point of disassemble. It also refers to the 1958 manual which I don't have but have access to,should purchase one. Can you suggest any rebuilders or anyone with remans. Will a good rebuild solve the free play problem? Rebuild kits are about 35.00. Can the average mechanic,me, and my well above average mechanic friend, should he decide to participate, attempt this without the proper mopar tools. Is there anything else I should know? I would also like to replace rubber bushing between the end of the steering column and top end of the gear. Can you suggest any suppliers?
Any help greatly appreciated. Larry Stanton
